ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
ETCHING
Etching is an intaglio printmaking process. To make an impression, a copper or zinc plate coated with an acid-resistant varnish is required. A drawing is made on this plate using a steel needle. The plate is then immersed in a 10% solution of nitric acid, which etches out the material in the areas exposed by the needle. The impression resembles a pen drawing.
AQUATINT
Aquatint is an intaglio printmaking technique. Aquatint differs from etching, first of all, by the fact that it is not the lines that are etched, but the planes. A metal plate is covered with powdered rosin or asphalt dust, which melts and sticks to it when heated. After etching the effect of light dots on a dark background is obtained. Up to about one hundred impressions can be created using the aquatint technique. Aquatint impressions made in the aquatint technique resemble watercolors or drawings varnished with ink.
Creating a printed form in this method includes:
- coating a metal plate with powdered rosin or asphalt dust, which melts and sticks to it when heated;
- image application by coating selected areas of the metal surface with varnish;
- then etching the exposed metal with nitric acid.
